As Christians, we often turn to the Bible for guidance on spiritual matters.
However, did you know that the Bible also has a lot to say about finances and money management?
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when we’re struggling financially, but taking a step back and looking to God’s Word can help provide us with the guidance and support that we need.
In this post, we’ll explore what the Bible says about being financially broke and what steps we can take to improve our financial situation.
God Provides for His Children
One important lesson we can learn from the Bible is that God promises to provide for His children.
In Matthew 6:31-33, Jesus says, “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
This doesn’t mean that we can sit back and expect money to magically appear in our bank accounts.
However, it does mean that we can trust God to provide for our needs as long as we’re seeking Him first.
If we prioritize our relationship with God, we’re much more likely to make wise financial decisions and to trust in His plan for our lives.
Beware of the Love of Money
While money is important for our daily needs, the Bible also warns us against the love of money.
In 1 Timothy 6:9-10, Paul says, “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
When we’re struggling financially, it’s easy to become obsessed with finding a way to make more money.
However, we need to be careful not to put our trust in money rather than in God.
Instead, we can seek contentment and joy in Christ, even in the midst of financial difficulties.
Seek Wise Counsel
Proverbs 15:22 tells us, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.”
When we’re dealing with financial difficulties, it’s important to seek counsel from people who are wise and knowledgeable.
This might mean talking to a financial advisor or budgeting expert, or it might mean seeking advice from a trusted Christian friend or mentor.
By seeking out wise counsel, we can gain new insights into our financial situation and develop a plan for moving forward.
We can also avoid making costly mistakes that could further damage our financial well-being.
Be Content with What You Have
In Hebrews 13:5, we’re reminded to “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'”
When we’re dealing with financial struggles, it can be tempting to focus on what we don’t have rather than on what we do have.
However, by cultivating a spirit of contentment, we can find joy and peace even in difficult circumstances.
We can also avoid the trap of constantly seeking more money or possessions in order to find fulfillment and happiness.
Being financially broke can be a difficult and stressful situation to be in.
However, as Christians, we can find hope and guidance in the Bible.
By trusting in God to provide for our needs, avoiding the love of money, seeking wise counsel, and cultivating a spirit of contentment, we can navigate the challenges of financial struggles with grace and wisdom.
Ultimately, our goal should not only be financial stability but also spiritual growth and greater dependency on God.
